Boston Edison begins operation.

Originally the Edison Electric Illuminating Company, it is incorporated on December 26, 1885, and operates the first electric generating station in Boston, a 75-horsepower engine and two dynamos. A new station is set up in a former stable at the corner of Haymarket Place and Bumstead Court in 1887.
